Older drivers' insurance boost

05 Apr 2012 at 10:33

A new deal agreed between the insurance industry and the Government means it should become easier for older motorists to obtain car insurance and travel insurance.

The ABI, the Government and the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) reached the car insurance agreement that comes into force on April 6.

The agreement means that if an insurer or broker is unable to offer cover due to an upper age limit, they will automatically point the customer in the direction of a provider that will offer coverage, or to a signposting service such as Biba's Find A Broker facility.

It is a condition of ABI membership to abide by the new system and all Biba brokers will also sign an undertaking to comply, while non-ABI and Biba members will follow the code on a voluntary basis.

Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities Theresa May welcomed the agreement, saying: "This is a great example of businesses working with Government to tackle discrimination."
