Fuel thieves arrested in Somerset

10 Feb 2014 at 11:14

Three more men have been arrested in the Somerset Levels on suspicion of stealing fuel as flooding continues to take its toll.

The trio, aged 51, 35 and 24, were stopped by police at 4am on Friday in Kingsdown, near the flooded village of Muchelney.

Officers found drums and an electric pump in their 4x4. All of them were taken to Yeovil police station following their arrests.

It follows the theft of 600 gallons of domestic heating oil from a farm in Moorland the previous Friday, while two fire service quad bikes were also taken from the village of Burrowbridge on the same night.

Thieves have been targeting flood stricken communities across the country, even looting abandoned cars.

The Somerset Levels have been particularly affected by the flooding, with many residents in the area urged to evacuate their homes.

Flooding is becoming an increasingly common reason for car insurance claims as motorists get caught out by rising river levels.
