Corrie star answers drink-drive charge

24 Apr 2014 at 12:04

The actress famed for her long-standing role as Rita Tanner on Coronation Street will appear in court on Thursday to face a charge of drink driving.

Veteran actress Barbara Knox will appear at Macclesfield Magistrates' Court after police arrested her in Knutsford on March.

On the evening of the arrest, Knox is said to have been a passenger in a Jaguar which was being driven by her 56-year-old daughter Maxine Ashcroft. Officers stopped the car after a call from a member of the public alerted them to the fact that Ashcroft could have been drinking.

A breathalyser test at Middlewich Police Station found Ashcroft to be three times over the legal limit.

Later Knox, 80, drove to the police station only to be arrested herself on suspicion of drink driving on arrival. After questioning she was bailed and earlier this month she was charged following further enquiries.

At a hearing at Macclesfield Magistrates' Court earlier this month, Ashcroft, from Lechlade, Gloucestershire, was banned from driving for two years.
